Abbyy Software

Overview  

Abbyy software is available via Remote Desktop Services, providing server-based access to a number of powerful tools including FineReaderPDF (edit, convert, and compare PDFs and scans) and Screenshot Reader (captures text and tables without retyping).

To take advantage of these resources, please first send an email to research.computing@dartmouth.edu to set up a license. Then connect to https://rds.dartmouth.edu and establish a Remote Desktop connection. You can then use the Abbyy tools.

Licensing  

There are limited numbers of licenses for this software. Please contact us at research.computing@dartmouth.edu for licensing questions. If licenses are available, we will add your NetID added to the pool of users for this application in the Microsoft Active Directory (AD).

Remote Desktop Services  

Before you can use the service, you must have the Microsoft Remote Desktop application installed. Confirm or download Microsoft Remote Desktop application:

  • Mac Users: download and install the Windows App from the Apple App store
  • Windows Users: the application is generally pre-installed. It is called ‘Remote Desktop Connection’.

Accessing the System  

  • Ensure that you have a WIFI connection and a VPN connection to Dartmouth College. See https://services.dartmouth.edu/TDClient/1806/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=66806 for more details.
  • Point a web browser (Google Chrome is recommended) to https://rds.dartmouth.edu/ and sign in by typing your Dartmouth NetID and password.
  • Click on the application’s icon. This will download a small file with the extension .rdp, which should appear in Google Chrome’s download tray.
  • Single-click this file from the download tray and choose “Open”.
  • In the sign-in screen that comes up, enter your NetID@kiewit.dartmouth.edu and your NetID password.

Accessing the Software  

  • Within a few seconds, the application should launch from the remote session.
  • Click on the icon of the application you with to use.

NOTE:

  • DartFS storage can be used with this machine to save files. The machine itself does not have much local storage.
  • If you don’t have DartFS storage yet, please visit our Getting Started with DartFS page. To connect to DartFS storage, click the software’s “File” menu, choose “Open”. In the pop-up box, in the ‘folder’ text box, enter your dartfs storage string, which will be of the form
