Installing ArcGIS software and obtaining a software license at Dartmouth College

ArcGIS 10.5.1 added to the software downloads page, with both the software installer and a PDF with instructions to connect to the license server

visit https://caligari.dartmouth.edu/downloads/esri/ for details

Decide if you need a concurrent license (connected to Dartmouth network at least once every 30 days), or a stand-alone, one-year license. If a stand-alone license is needed, contact Steve Gaughan or Lucinda Hall for a license.

Connect to the Dartmouth network, through the VPN client or directly from your office or the Dartmouth wireless. VPN clients for the various computer operating systems can be downloaded here:
https://services.dartmouth.edu/TDClient/Requests/ServiceDet?ID=30995

Next, navigate your web browser to here: https://caligari/downloads/esri/software/ and click on the link for ArcGIS Desktop 10.x to download and run the ArcGIS Desktop installer. Note: you may need “Administrator” privileges on your machine in order to install software. For administrator rights assistance on Dartmouth-owned computers, please contact IT support at help@dartmouth.edu

When the install is complete, if you will be using Dartmouth’s sitewide license at rc-arc-license1.dartmouth.edu, choose the “concurrent” option, and click the button to enter the license manager. Set the license manager to rc-arc-license1.dartmouth.edu

Close the installer. Your software is now ready to use. To launch ArcMap, from your Windows start menu, choose Start > All Programs > ArcGIS > ArcMap

Resetting the license manager

To set or reset the license manager at a later time (after the install process), make sure that ArcGIS Desktop is closed, and that you are connected to the Dartmouth network directly or through VPN. Then go to the Windows Start menu and choose Programs > Arcgis > Arcgis Administrator. When that opens, click “Desktop” in the left-hand column, and then under “license manager”, click the “Choose” button and then set the license to rc-arc-license1.dartmouth.edu

Click “OK” to save and dismiss the ArcGIS Administrator window. Your license is now configured.

Borrowing an ArcGIS license for up to 30 days

Make sure that ArcGIS Desktop is closed, and that you are connected to the Dartmouth network directly or through VPN. Then go to the Windows Start menu and choose Programs > Arcgis > Arcgis Administrator. When that opens, choose the Borrow/ Return option from the left side menu.

Put a check mark in the box to the right of ArcGIS desktop for ‘Borrow’. If you need any extensions, place a check mark next to those too. Then click OK to save and close the window. Your computer is now configured to use an ArcGIS license for up to 30 days without connection to the Dartmouth network.
